Youth Futures in Dignified and Fulfilling Work

Youth Futures in Dignified and Fulfilling Work

Active research project, started 2024

Youth Futures: towards dignified and fulfilling work in Africa

The Youth Futures Data Repository is a pan-African initiative that guides young people towards evidence-based skills development and career decisions. Funded by the Mastercard Foundation and spanning eight countries, it asks what young Africans need to know to find sustainable, dignified and fulfilling work, and what data is required to answer those questions at continental scale.

The project bridges the informal and formal economies, takes in the gig economy and the growing culture of workism, and pays particular attention to gender inclusion. Alongside the repository itself, it builds data analytics capacity in each participating country, so that the insights it generates are country-specific and locally owned.

How the research is being done

A three-phase design that trains local researchers first, then listens to young people, then builds the framework from what they say. Two questions guide the work throughout.

What the research asks
  • What are the key questions guiding African youth in skills development and career selection?
  • What data is necessary to guide youth to sustainable, dignified and fulfilling work on the continent?
Phase 1Review and training

A literature review and bibliometric analysis, followed by a central-Africa workshop that trains around two research assistants in each participating country.

Phase 2Youth interviews

Qualitative interviews with young people across the eight countries, gamified for younger respondents to make participation engaging and the data richer.

Phase 3Synthesis

Findings consolidated into a conceptual framework for the data repository, a research report and policy recommendations.

Where the research is happening

8countries, each with trained in-country research assistants contributing to the repository

Participating countries

  • Nigeria
  • Kenya
  • Ghana
  • Rwanda
  • Ethiopia
  • Uganda
  • South Africa
  • Senegal

What the project will deliver

  • Conceptual data repository framework
  • Research report and policy recommendations
  • Youth interview data from across the continent
  • Trained in-country research assistants in all eight countries

Why this research matters

Young Africans make decisions about skills and careers with little reliable, locally relevant data to draw on. This project aims to change that by giving them evidence-based information for informed career decisions, bridging the informal and formal economies, and building data analytics skills in each country so that the insights keep growing after the project ends.

SDG 4Quality education
SDG 8Decent work and economic growth
SDG 10Reduced inequalities

A pan-African partnership

Delivered with the Mastercard Foundation's network partners and university partners across the eight participating countries, building research capacity on the continent as the repository is built.

About the project

Youth Futures is contract research led by the Centre for the Future of Work at the University of Pretoria, commissioned by the Mastercard Foundation in 2024 and currently active. It sits within the Centre’s youth employment and skills work, building a data repository for skills and job-market readiness across the continent.
