This project produced a white paper from a multidisciplinary workshop held in Nairobi in November 2023, bringing together cross organisational stakeholders to examine the implications of generative AI for the future of work in Africa. It synthesised perspectives across macroeconomic impacts, jobs and skills, workers’ perspectives, and Africa-centric AI platforms, with the aim of generating actionable insights and recommendations for a dignified, inclusive, and socially responsible future of work across the continent.

1. To examine whether and how generative AI can shape the future of work in Africa; to identify opportunities and risks across labour markets, productivity, inequality, skills, culture, language, and data; to advance Africa-centric and human centred AI approaches; and to stimulate debate, policy development, and collaborative action.

Multidisciplinary workshop based inquiry and synthesis. The project convened diverse thought leaders in Nairobi on 3 November 2023 for structured discussions across four thematic areas, after which contributors developed the white paper sections and consolidated recommendations.

The project is intended to inform policy, research, and practice on generative AI and work in Africa, helping position Africa at the forefront of designing a dignified future of work. It seeks to support equitable growth, worker protection, skills development, Africa-centric innovation, and responsible AI governance.
