In this Business Talk with Michael Avery interview, Dr Olebogeng Selebi, Deputy Director of the University of Pretoria’s Centre for the Future of Work (CFoW), addresses the South African job market and explains why South Africa has to close the skills gap.
Dr. Selebi holds degrees in communications, media, and economics from the Universities of Graz (Austria), Porto (Portugal), and Milan (Italy). She also has a PhD in Communication Management from the University of Pretoria, which resulted in the creation of a communication framework for South Africa’s National Development Plan.
She analyzes the significant decline in graduate unemployment in South Africa and explains why she feels it occurred. Furthermore, she then reveals which basic skills are lacking in South Africa and argues why this has to be addressed. She also highlights the necessity of teaching soft skills in educational institutions, as well as solutions for retaining competent professionals in South Africa.
Dr. Selebi concludes the interview by outlining the new CFoW website, including its core objectives, key study topics, and how the organization intends to foster economic growth in South Africa.
